Floriculture in India
According to the National portal of India, “floriculture is the art and knowledge of growing flowers to perfection. Being a branch of horticulture, it deals with the cultivation of flowers and ornamental crops from the time of planting to the time of harvesting. It also includes production of planting materials through seeds, cuttings, budding, grafting and marketing of flowers and flower produce.”
Floriculture includes Nursery planting i.e. growing flowers in relatively smaller quantities in nurseries and flower farming i.e. producing flowers in large scale.
The Business of Floriculture
Floriculture is part of horticulture that deals with cultivation of flowers. Hiving originated as a hobby, floriculture has widespread commercial suage. Development of hybrid technology has made it possible for growing different varieties of flowers. Flowers are sold in pots and are sold for interior decoration of homes and offices. It has now become a viable business option. Currently India is the second largest producer of Flowers after China.
Productivity wise, Bihar is the leading state followed by Haryana. For obvious reasons, Rajasthan is the least productive state. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi constitute 77% of the total area under floriculture crops in India.
Exports of floriculture products from India is valued at 100 crore rupees (1 billion rupees).
Flowering Patterns in Indian States
North Eastern states, specially Meghalaya, is know for their variety of orchids and ornamental flowers.
In South India, consumption of flowers is much greater than in North India, for cultural reasons. Flowers are used as garlands, for perfumes, bu florists, etc. Most of the metros have huge demand for modern exotic flowers.
Andaman and Nicobar Island house more 200 varieties of flowers, more than 100 of which are different varieties of orchids.
