Don’t have access to ground but want to grow a perfect vegetable garden? No worries. As long as you can have some sunshine pouring into the balcony or have access to grow lights you are good to go. Growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs is the best way to ensure you are getting all the nutritious food you need fresh and unspoiled without having to worry about what chemicals or fertilizers have been used during the process. It also cuts down your food shopping bills, which means you get to spend all that money on something else you have always wanted or save it for future use. So here is how you can grow your own potted food garden.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are beautiful sunshiny vegetables, or more correctly fruits, that make for excellent potted plants. You can have the pot on the ground, hanging from the ceiling and even grow the plant upside down as long as you make sure the pot is big enough to for the root.
Strawberries
People have been happily enjoying planting strawberries in different container situations for a very long time. You can even have them growing indoors and let the bright red jeweled fruits among lush green leaves brighten your interiors. Remember to harvest them regularly to make room for the next fruit and make sure the pot has enough room for the roots.
Peppers
Peppers are yet another family of plants that happily enjoy growing in containers. Besides if you plant your own peppers you can have them in all colors, green, yellow, orange and red without having to separately buy them at stores. They love sunlight and require at least eight hours of it everyday.
Potatoes
Potatoes love growing in containers. If you are planning on having big harvests you can plant them in big containers, around a 10 liter sized container or in buckets. You can also grow them in small containers separately. They produce year around and you can dig up the potatoes and keep letting the plants grow and give you more potatoes.
Herbs
Herbs are perfect in potted environments. They are portable small and might not even require huge planters to have them. You can grow them on your kitchen counter top, in your windows, your balcony or just anywhere there is enough light available. Cilantro, thyme, rosemary, oregano, basil and any of them can be easily grown.
Cucumber
Cucumbers are another great vegetable plant that you can grow easily in containers. You can plant a pole beside it to support it or let it vine up over a frame. Almost any kind of cucumber can thrive in potted environment and you can try and experiment with different varieties without worrying about having enough ground space for them all.
Eggplant
Eggplants are quite easy to grow in planters. All you have to do is make sure that the plants are warm enough and are watered regularly. You would need to use planters that are at least five or six inches deep to allow room for the root and not to crowd the plant. Clay pots make for excellent planters as they have less insulating properties and will allow heat inside and excess water outside to evaporate.
Blueberries
Even if you have a lot of ground available for gardening, blueberries are best grown in pots. They thrive in acidic soil and keeping them in containers and the soil contained helps isolate their acidic soil from the soil your other plants are in. The only downside is that it takes at least two years, just like with any other good fruit plants, for a good blueberry produce.
