Brindavan Gardens

Brindavan Gardens is located near Mysore city in the state of Karnataka in India. It lies adjoining the Krishnarajsagara Dam, built across the river Cauvery. One of the major tourist attractions near Mysore, it is visited by nearly 2 million tourists every year. It is one of the most beautiful terrace gardens of the world and is world famous for its symmetric design.

The work on laying out this garden was started in 1927 under the guidance of Sir Mirza Ismail, the Diwan of Mysore. It was called Krishnarajasagara Terrace Garden back then. It was finished in 1932. Sir Mirza Ismail developed this garden to beautify the dam site and made it in the Mughal style like the Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir.

Today, the garden spans over 60 acres and is laid out in three terraces which end in a horseshoe shape. The slopes of the garden are planted with Bougainvilleas and ornamental plants. The garden consists of open spaces, lawns, illuminated flower beds and ornamental plants. It has animal sculptures created by clipping shrubs, shaded passageways covered by creepers and gazebos. The garden also has a boating pond in the center. The Brindavan Gardens is considered to be the best illuminated terrace gardens in India. The Garden, when completely illuminated, becomes and enchanting site.

The Brindavan Gardens has a musical and dancing fountain, which is its main attraction. The musical fountain is a harmonious combination of water, colored lights and music. The water dances to the tunes of music and the light illuminates this water ballet.

Maintained by the Department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka, the Garden is divided into four areas.

  • Brindavan Gardens – 60 Acres
  • Government Fruit Orchard – 75 acres
  • Naguvana – 30 acres
  • Chandravana – 5 acres

Brindavan Gardens is again divided into:

  • Main Gate Area – The main gate, modeled on India Gate in New Delhi
  • South Brindavan – It has all the water fountains
  • North Brindavan – It has four extensive terraces
  • Children’s Garden – Children’s play area
