Vertical gardening isn’t just the new trend. It’s the best possible way of growing a full lush garden when you don’t have much space. Whether you want to grow succulents, vegetables, fruits, herbs or flowering plants, you can plant just about anything on a vertical garden. What takes many square feet of space if planted on the ground only requires a few feet when planted vertically. They also make for a great living wall space indoors, improve the quality of air a lot more than normal garden does as you can grow them as high as you want and would look immensely beautiful. Many newly built places these days as part of going green are now planting gardens on their front walls creating absolutely stunning facades. Want to make your own vertical garden? Here is how you can do it.
The easiest way to create a simple vertical garden is to use tiered planters. If you have wide mouthed planters with a small bottom then all you have to do is fill the first planter with soil, place a rock or an inverted planter that you will not use in the center and place the next planter on top of it. it is important that the bottom of the planter is narrow, otherwise there will not be enough space for the plants in the planter below it to grow. Alternatively you can use planters of decreasing sizes on top the other.
This is also a really easy to make vertical garden. You can use a wide variety of planters hung one below the other. Using a wide planter, such as a narrow rectangular tub or a huge tube sliced in half along the length will make for an excellent garden. Always make sure, however, that the support from which you are hanging the planters and the wire or rope you are using are strong enough to bear their weight and a little more, taking into account water and the tugging force when there are winds.
Simply construct a square or rectangular wooden planters in decreasing size that can be placed on top of one another like a small staircase. Fill them with soil and plant your trees. You can also arrange them in different ways to get the maximum out of them. Arranging them in steps makes sure all the plants in them get equal sunlight. You can also use plastic rectangular or circular tubs in decreasing sizes for this type of vertical garden.
Construct a simple rack of the size you want or you can just use any old rack or spice rack in your house that you are not using anymore. If the shelves have walls high enough fill them with soil and plant your trees. If not, you can just use small planters and place them in the shelves. Also make sure that all the plants receive sunlight. Keep the bigger ones at the bottom so that the plants below won’t be overshadowed.
You can use chicken wire or any strong mesh wire in various ways to create a vertical garden. One way to use it is to create a hollow cylindrical structure. You can line inside edges with dry grass, plastic sheet or some form of mulch that can stay put vertically. Alternatively you can also use plastic drums or tall cylindrical buckets for this. Take a long tube that is as tall as the cylindrical structure. Make holes along its length at regular intervals and put it in the center of the cylinder. This tube allows you to water along the length of the cylinder and ensures the water directly reaches the roots. So make sure the holes are of enough size so as not to let the soil in but lets the water out. Now fill the cylinder with soil with the plants poking out through the gaps in the cylinder.
