A vertical garden is also known as a living wall, green wall or sky farm. Such walls are part of an urban building and are well suited to the urban landscape, where there is paucity of horizontal space but abundance of vertical space due to huge buildings. Vertical gardens can look quite spectacular and off late have become quite an art form. Patrick Blanc is one of the most pioneering vertical gardening artists and has constructed the famous vertical garden on the wall of Quai Branly Museum in Paris.
These gardens can be grown on any type of walls, with or without the use of soils and on both outdoor and indoor walls. These vertical gardens weigh approximately 30 kg or less per square metre and thus, can be grown on any kind of wall.
Vertical gardens can be created easily with vines and climbing plants or by using a collection of potted plants stacked on top of one another. Check out the video below to see how a living wall is installed using plywood backing.
